Almay Jordaan
Co-Owner and Head of Food at Neighbourhood Group (Neighbourhood Wine, Old Palm Liquor, Bahama Gold)

Born and raised in the Western Cape province of South Africa, chef Almay Jordaan’s food is emblematic of South African delicacy with nods to classical French techniques. Almay’s independent approach and strong passion for history, produce and farming is evident through her rustic provençal style of craft in all her venues.
Growing up on a table grape farm in Hex Valley, Almay learned the ropes of baking from her mother, where she developed her keen passion for food. She honed in her skills through studying cookery at the highly-acclaimed Institute of Culinary Arts in Stellenbosch and Classical History, Journalism & French at the University of Cape Town, before securing an industry role.
Beginning her career in various restaurants in Cape Town, Almay spent four years working under the renowned South African chef, Pete Goffe-Wood, as his 2IC. This role had her working across restaurant consultancy, brand activations, private catering and cookbooks for Pete, where she developed the administrative and management skills in hospitality.
Following this, Almay moved to London where she continued her management role under Pete for the South African Embassies in Lisbon, Madrid, Moscow & Budapest, in addition to working in various acclaimed restaurants and wine bars for three years before moving to Melbourne.
In partnership with her husband, Almay has now developed three of her own ventures in Melbourne’s inner-north; Neighbourhood Wine, Old Palm Liquor and Bahama Gold. Her historical food philosophy aligns with the core values of each of her venues, through a contemporary approach with an ode to her South African childhood.
In 2022, her role as Head Chef sees her specialising in anything cooked over fire, European-inspired charcuterie and working with high quality local produce including fish and shellfish, lesser known soft herbs, summer fruits, elderflower and warm spices. Her abundance of experience and knowledge in tandem with her devotion to her craft, is a true testament to the origins and success of each of her Melbourne venues.
